Remember that “somewhere remote” I mentioned in my Stories? Well, I made it to Sumba: an Indonesian island twice the size of Bali, yet nowhere near as visited! 🗺️

Think: tall thatched-roof villages, empty horizons, turquoise waterfalls, and yes, a couple standout accommodations in case you want a soft landing! 🤎

I traveled here solo to experience a slower side of Indonesia. Most days on the island look like dust on your boots, bamboo houses in the distance, and friendly waves (or honks!) from people you pass on the road. Distances are long, cell service is patchy, and it’s worth every bit of effort. 🥹

Exploring Padang Padang, the Eat Pray Love beach (minus the film crew, plus a little more sunscreen!) 🐚

It’s crowded, sure, but worth a stop if you’re passing through Bali on the way to somewhere wilder.

Secret Tips for Visiting Padang Padang:
🤎 Great For: Swimming + Surfing
🤎 When To Go: Early! The beach is tiny and fills up fast.
🤎 Entry Fee: 15K IDR/adult (Bring cash)
🤎 Parking: 2K-5K, vehicle-type dependent. The lot is across the street from the beach so watch out for traffic before crossing!
🤎 Other: You’ll need to walk down a narrow limestone staircase to reach the sand. While there’s a spot on the beach that sells food and a surf camp that rents boards and other equipment, don’t forget to bring a towel, sunscreen, and anything else you may need.
