Located in Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39 is arguably the most popular visitor attraction in both San Francisco and the entire Bay Area. However, if you ask a local San Franciscan, they might argue that it’s a tourist trap you’d best avoid. And while it’s true that you won’t find the true pulse of San Francisco here, Pier 39 is definitely still a fun spot that’s worth the visit – if you know a few secret tips and tricks. So here’s the first post in my new blog post series, How To Enjoy A “Tourist Trap”: San Francisco Pier 39:

The earliest attractions and shops on the pier open at 10AM. Come one hour early to take pictures throughout the pier without the crowds.

Once 10 AM hits, go purchase tickets and enjoy some of Pier 39’s amusement park-style attractions. This is the perfect time to ride with little-to-no wait times as most people are only beginning to show up to the Pier and usually want to look around first before committing to an activity.
My Favorite Pier 39 Rides:
- The Flyer – it was like a small-scale SF-themed version of Soaring Over California at Disneyland’s California Adventure
- Alcatraz Escape Room
- San Francisco Carousel
- 7D Theater: Carnavale Option – felt like a scary, adult version of Toy Story Midway Mania! at Disneyland’s California Adventure
- Bay Plunge
- Magowan’s Infinite Mirror Maze
Secret Tip:
Consider purchasing one of the cost-saving Ride Packages at the Flyer Thrill Zone. I loved Package C, which grants you one entry to three Pier 39 attractions: The Flyer, 1 of 2 Escape Rooms and the 7D Theater.

Bonus Tip:
Skip the Aquarium of the Bay. Instead, take a day trip to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

For the best time cruising around the bay, I have two main tips. The first is to book prior to visiting Pier 39. Often, you can find great discounts on sites like Groupon.
Schedule your sailing trip either during the afternoon or sunset. An afternoon excursion will allow you escape the crowds and, while it will still feel brisk on the water, help you experience the best possible weather. A sunset cruise is perfect if you’re hoping for a romantic trip with picture-perfect views.
My Favorite Bay Cruise Operators at Pier 39:
- Blue and Gold Fleet – $4 off when booked online
- Wine Therapy – Local wines available for purchase on board
- Bay Voyager – For adrenaline junkies!
Secret Tip:
Bring snacks, a bottled water and make sure to dress in layers for your cruise!

Pier 39 is home to tons of shops selling too many goods to name! While it’s a fun to peruse, remember that many of these items will be priced at a premium due to their location on the pier.
My Favorite Items To Shop For at Pier 39:
- Ornaments
- Sunglasses – RayBan has a stand without huge mark-ups!
- Fresh Fruits
- Spices and Teas
- Chocolate and Fudge
Secret Tip:
You’ll find plenty of San Francisco-branded merchandise like shirts, hats and sweatshirts on Pier 39, but if you’re searching for more authentic or niche gifts, check out some of SF’s other neighborhoods like Chinatown, The Castro, The Mission.

It’s true. The best food in San Francisco is definitely not located on Pier 39, but there are still some good and easy-to-walk-to restaurants in the touristy Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood.
