    Great Scott! Welcome to Los Angeles: the fictional Hill Valley and home of Marty McFly and Doc Brown from Back to the Future. The greater LA area is not only home to the movie’s most iconic filming locations, but it’s also full of aesthetic spots that will make you feel like you’ve stepped out of the DeLorean and into 1955:

    Gamble House

    The Gamble House in Pasadena achieved cinematic fame as the exterior of Doc Brown’s eccentric and iconic Hill Valley lab in Back to the Future. Before it became one of the most recognizable homes in cinematic history, this Charles and Henry Greene-designed architectural gem served as a summer residence for the Gamble family of Procter & Gamble.

    With its distinctive wooden detailing and picturesque setting, Its striking Arts and Crafts architecture provided the perfect backdrop for the film’s beloved scenes, adding a touch of charm and timelessness to the story.

    To this day, you can tour the Gamble House, reliving the magic of the movie and witnessing early Pasadena history, and visit the gift shop, perusing the Gamble House’s Back to the Future-themed mementos.

    Bushnell Avenue

    Bushnell Avenue is a quiet, tree-lined street in South Pasadena that may look like an ordinary suburban neighborhood, but is actually a key Back to the Future filming location. Walking down Bushnell, you’ll recognize the 1955 Hill Valley homes of George McFly, Lorraine Baines and Biff Tannen.

    Beyond its movie magic, Bushnell Avenue captures a timeless, quintessential Southern California vibe with charming Craftsman homes and lush greenery—perfect for adding some film history to your LA-inspired travel content.

    NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory

    The closest you’ll get to being inside Doc Brown’s laboratory in real life, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory is located along the border of Pasadena and La Cañada Flintridge. While it doesn’t focus on time travel in the film sense, JPL’s time travel tie-in is through its communications to and from spacecraft and satellites throughout the solar system. Because their great distances, any time JPL receives or sends a message there is a delay – meaning the scientists there-in are communicating either in the future or the past, depending on your perspective.

    JPL is also the birthplace of many well-known spacecraft . From the Mars Curiosity Rover to the Europa Clipper, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory has the real-life science and innovation that make it perfect for fans of Doc and his DeLorean.

    Petersen Automotive Museum

    Not only is the Petersen Automotive Museum one of the most fun museums in LA – which is saying a lot coming from me – but its Cars of Film and Television exhibit holds none other the DeLorean itself! Come see Doc Brown’s time-traveling invention up close and personal and don’t forget to view some of the museum’s other themed exhibits like “Fast/Forward: Strother MacMinn’s Sports Cars of the Future“!

From futuristic postcards to “Pastports” and from the Time Scouts Handbook to “Time Travel Sickness Pills“, has all you might be looking for before your next trip aboard the DeLorean.

    Griffith Park Tunnel

    Technically a prominent location in Back to the Future II, Griffith Park‘s iconic tunnel is where Marty tries to steal Grays Sports Almanac from the film’s villain, Biff Tannen.

    Universal Studios Clock Tower

    Catch a glimpse of Hill Valley’s historic clock tower at Universal Studios Hollywood. Although Doc and Marty have already used the notorious 1955 lightning storm to power the DeLorean, you can still explore the same street that Marty did before he time traveled back to 1985 via a Studio Tour Tram.

    Museum of Jurassic Technology

    Is there anywhere else in Los Angeles that will make you feel as nostalgic and time-travel-y as the Museum of Jurassic Technology? Step back in time with a walk through the disorienting Museum’s collection and view obscure pieces that time long since forgot including scientific letters, photographs and, of course, the technological pieces and instruments themselves.

    Hollywood Methodist Church

    An easy place to hit during your Back to the Future-themed tour of Los Angeles is the Hollywood Methodist Church. Located about a block away from the famous Hollywood and Highland intersection, the Church was used as the location of the Hill Valley High’s 1955 School Dance.

    An Exciting Two Days in Machu Picchu by Train

    In December 2021, I visited Machu Picchu for my first – and second! – time. I was spending a month in Peru and one of my goals was to photograph the world famous archeological site from above. Since I knew that the inclement wet season could spoil my plan, I decided to increase my odds for success by booking two visits: one in the early morning and the other in the late afternoon.     Ollantaytambo

    Ollantaytambo

    Before my two day trip to the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu, I spent some time in Ollantaytambo, a town in Peru’s Sacred Valley. Here, I acclimated to the minor time difference from California and the slightly more extreme high altitude in the Andes. Prior to arriving, I Googled multiple places to stay throughout the Valley, but decided on Ollantaytambo for two major reasons:

    The first was a beautiful and historic train station hotel: El Albergue Ollantaytambo. Coincidentally, the hotel was and is still such a unique and unforgettable accommodation that it was even named one of Condé Nast Traveler’s Best Places To Go in 2023.

    The second reason was that Ollantaytambo acts as the main gateway to Machu Picchu. Regardless of whether you’re trekking or taking the train, you must depart from Ollantaytambo.

    While getting settled, I explored other Inca sites in the Sacred Valley, tasted chica for the first time and bought a special COVID-19 facial visor just outside of the train station.

    What Is Chicha?

    Chicha is a fermented corn drink, similar to beer, emerging from the Andes and Amazonia areas in South America.

    Don’t drink alcohol? Order a glass of Chicha Morada, a non-alcoholic version of the drink made from red-dyed corn, azucar, cinnamon, pineapple skin and lemon.

    COVID-19 Information

    Peru was hit extremely hard by COVID-19 so they took more health and safety precautions than I had seen elsewhere.

    To enter the country, you must provide your completed COVID-19 vaccination card or negative COVID-19 molecular test taken at a maximum of 48 hours prior to arrival. Finally, within 72 hours prior to arrival, you must register in the online form “Affidavit of Health and Geolocation Authorization“.

    For Machu Picchu in 2019, I was required to double mask on the train (this meant wearing a facial visor and an approved face mask, like the KN-95)!

    Universally, I’ve found KN-95 masks to be the most widely accepted face masks. Visors, on the other hand, are a bit easier and can be purchased with Peruvian soles at one of the stands near the train station – just make sure to give yourself enough time to buy these before your train departs.

    Today, masking on-board the train is optional.

    The Train

    Departure

    I met my guide, Ruben, at 8AM in the lobby of my hotel, which was already connected to the train station. I had pre-booked my private tour with Alpaca Expeditions, a locally-owned Peruvian tour operator known for their sustainability, competitive wages, dietary accommodations and safety standards.

    In the thirty minutes we had before departure, Ruben double checked my passport and the remainder of my tour payment. It was also during this time that I checked my larger, month-long suitcase into the hotel’s luggage storage, prepared to pick-it-up upon return from Machu Picchu. There are strict luggage limits for both the PeruRail and Inca Rail trains.

    Ruben and I then waited until I was called to board the train, where he explained that he and the other guides travel in a separate Locals-only train car and that we would meet up again at the train’s final stop in Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Town.

    The Train Ride

    Soon, my ticket, passport and luggage were being checked by PeruRail staff and we were on our way.

    I had chosen to ride on the PeruRail Expedition car. This was the least expensive of their offerings, but since the trip was so short, I felt it unnecessary to upgrade. And turns out, this was a smart move! On the return journey, PeruRail offered me a free upgrade to their Vistadome train. There, I enjoyed better views of the surrounding area and a complimentary show. Traveling solo has its perks!

    During both hour and fifteen minute trips, we made a few local stops while the intercom provided information on each of the towns, ruins and flora we passed. It’s a scenic train ride – full of orchids, bromeliads and ferns!

    Arrival + Accommodation

    Checking-In

    I met back up with Ruben after arriving at the train station and we began to weave our way towards my hotel for the night: Jaya Suite Machu Picchu.

    Touring with Alpaca Expeditions was seamless, as they took care of booking my hotel in advance and facilitated the check-in process for me. Ruben was more than helpful the entire way. After I was all set with my room number and key, he gave me about an hour of free-time to settle in before we’d meet back up for lunch.

    The Room

    My room at Jaya was much larger than I anticipated. I had a Double Suite Room with a view of the Aguas Calientes River.

    The standouts of the room were definitely the colorfully designed bedding and the bathroom’s jacuzzi style tub. My only complaint about the accommodation was that the running water in the hotel was a noticeable brown color if it collected in the sink or tub. However, I chalked this up to the time of year and location, vowing to take a more thorough shower once I had made it to my next hotel in Cusco.

    The Breakfast

    Outside of the room amenities, I had a wonderful breakfast with a view on the hotel’s top floor the following morning. Jaya offers guests complimentary fresh juices, hot drinks, eggs, vegetables, sausages, fruits and breads.

    Secret Tip:

    Peru’s tap water isn’t safe for drinking, but most hotels will provide you with two complimentary bottled waters at the start of you stay.

    Aguas Calientes

    Aguas Calientes

    After settling into my hotel, I met back up with Ruben for some lunch and light exploring. We had time to kill before our first visit to Machu Picchu that afternoon!

    I soon realized that the town itself is definitely just there for tourism. Although small, it’s primarily made up of hotels, hostels, restaurants souvenir shops, and a market, located just outside of the train station. There are a few small photo-ops for entertainment around town too.

    I wasn’t expecting much from our two days in town, but I did walk away with one new favorite memory: the stray dog pictured above! Like many of the towns and cities throughout the Andes, Aguas Calientes is home to quite a number of strays. On our second day, this little guy ended up following me around until we had to board the train back to Ollantaytambo. Had I not already had a senior dog to take care of back home nor an extra three weeks traveling through the country, I may have found a way to adopt him!

    Restaurants

    I tried a few restaurants in Aguas Calientes, but out of them all, I had the best time at Mapacho Craft Beer and Peruvian Cuisine.

    Not only did the restaurant have an unbeatable view of the Urubamba River, but they also offered live music from a local band. Mapacho also had great drinks, with it being the one spot in town to order a Mimosa, a drink which, to my dismay, most locals had unfortunately not heard of! I ended up eating at Mapacho twice, first ordering the quinoa with vegetables and alpaca and then the chicken empanada.

    The Bus Ride

    Closer to mid-afternoon, it was finally time to visit Machu Picchu. We queued up in line at the bus station and waited maybe 15 minutes total before I showed my ticket and boarded the bus.

    The bus ride was about 5.5 miles and curved up along Hiram Bingham Road. All-in-all, it lasted around 20 minutes. It was about this time that I noticed there were also steep stairs along the winding path of the road.

    Ruben mentioned that some tourists wish to climb up from town instead of taking the bus, similar to how many tourists take multi-day treks into Machu Picchu. For me though, let’s just say I was extremely thankful for the bus on that humid December afternoon!

    The Entrance

    Soon enough, we arrived at the entrance. Here was where we found the gift shop, the only available bathrooms and a line to get into the archaeological city. We took a quick pit stop before making our way inside.

    Circuit 2

    Once past the entrance, Ruben opened up a map and we picked which of Machu Picchu’s four circuits would be best for our afternoon visit. Since afternoons are less crowded, we thought it best to go for Circuit 2, the longest and typically most popular of the available circuits.

    Maybe it was the humid afternoon weather, maybe it was not quite knowing what to expect, but Circuit 2 immediately took my breath away – both literally and figuratively. The beginning of the trail began with a zig-zag hike to the highest point on the hill: the upper terraces. So, we trudged our way up the Inca stairs to a most spectacular view.

    We spent a bit of time at the top, marveling the sights. To our amusement, we found not one, not two, not even three, but four different llamas lazing about and eating grass. I’ve never found animals quite like this on top of other world famous archeological sites, but in Machu Picchu, llamas are encouraged to roam freely. They’ve supported a large part of the local economy since even before the Incas built Machu Picchu and still continue to do so today.

    After visiting the high upper terraces, we slowly made our way down to La Puerta del Sol, the city’s main gateway. I remember thinking how the view on our walk was even more incredible than it was from above, if you can believe it – and so we made plenty of stops for photos!

    Next, we walked through the city – leisurely exploring the granite quarry area, Sacred Main Square, the Intihuatana, the Sacred Rock and the Room of Mirrors. Walking around these areas, I could not believe our luck. We were blessed with an almost empty archeological site to explore. Part of me still thinks that we lucked out because tourism still wasn’t back to 100% from the pandemic, but if I’m ever lucky enough to visit Peru again, I’d certainly visit Machu Picchu during a winter afternoon.

    A Quick Look at Huayna Picchu

    With some extra time before the site closed, we ended the circuit with a quick jaunt up the path to Huayna Picchu. While we didn’t buy add-on tickets nor would we be hiking up this incredibly steep mountain, Ruben said we can head over a ways for a closer look. It was a fun sight to see and I’m so glad that Ruben was able to showed me this additional bit of the Machu Picchu area!

    Circuit 4

    The following morning, we left the Jaya Hotel noticing that we barely escaped the rain that drenched Aguas Calientes overnight. We had been lucky.

    Since it had passed, Ruben told me he was convinced that the sun would hold while inside the site. The morning kicked off similarly to the afternoon prior – starting with a bus ride up the mountain and a short bathroom break before entering.

    This time, however, Ruben and I were set on exploring Circuit 4, Machu Picchu’s second longest route covering the lower terraces, Temple of the Sun, House of the Inca, and a few of the same locations from day before.

    We quickly ascended up to the “lower” terraces, which were actually situated higher than the main entrance, but lower than the upper terraces from the day before.

    I thought the day before was beautiful, but I was still unprepared for the sights I was about to see. Wisps of cloud that had encircled the city were slowly dissipating under the rising sun. I’ve been to a lot of fantastic places around the world, but I’d never been anywhere as mystical as Machu Picchu felt under that sunrise. I quickly copied the view into memory, knowing it would forever live as of those secret moments where you had to actually be there and to truly understand the magic.

    House of the Inca

    It took a bit of time, but eventually I peeled myself back from the lower terrace view and followed Ruben down the mountain and into the city. Being on the second bus that morning, we mostly had the site to ourselves again. And it was just as wonderful, if not even more so due to the crisp morning air keeping us cool under the rising humidity.

    This time around, we visited the former royal residence, or the House of the Inca. I loved seeing and comparing it against the rest of the city’s living quarters. Similar to the joy I get while viewing antique furniture and vintage wardrobes in museums, I’ve always found the domestic architecture to be the among the most fascinating. I love learning how people, no matter their station, had lived.

    Takeaways

    Having visited Machu Picchu twice on back-to-back days, here are my main takeaways:

    Bring your passport! You can get a Machu Picchu stamp before leaving on the bus. Additionally, your passport is required for entry, in addition to your ticket.

    If visiting during the Wet Season and time permits, plan a night in Aguas Calientes so you can experience both an afternoon and a morning in Machu Picchu.

    If visiting during the Wet Season and time is limited, visit in the afternoon – and try to go in the last hour slot available.

    The longer Circuits (Circuit 2 and 4) are both amazing, but I preferred Circuit 2 for fewer crowds. The lower terraces of Circuit 2 also had some phenomenal views!

    Take your time exploring if you’re on a private tour! The crowds ebb and flow with groups, so even if certain sections feel crowded at the moment, chances are that you’ll have a spot all to yourself in just a few moments.

    Wear light pants and an airy long sleeve top. Despite the humidity, they are easy to explore in and will keep you from getting bug bites!

    Don’t forget sunglasses! Machu Picchu is a high altitude city and much brighter than you’re probably used to.

    Begin your day at the museum by visiting The Getty Villa. Known for its Greek, Roman and Etruscan art, the Villa itself is even modeled in the style of an ancient Roman villa,

    Pretend you’ve been transported back in time by exploring its beautiful gardens and fountains first thing before the crowds and heat kick-in. Then head back inside to enjoy the full collection.

    Lunch

    After enjoying the Villa, drive over to Brentwood to dine at nearby restaurants like Farmshop, Joe & The Juice and Toscana. With a laid-back ambiance and great bites, these spots will keep you both relaxed and ready to continue your museum adventures into the afternoon.

    Early Afternoon

    Next up, make your way to the Getty Center and ride the tram up from the parking structure to the exhibits at the top of the hill. There’s plenty to discover in the museum’s pre-20th-century European art collection so take your time and enjoy the afternoon away.

    If you need a break between exhibits, don’t be afraid to hit up the museum’s onsite restaurant for a glass of wine or to enjoy a mid-afternoon picnic on the grounds.

    Late Afternoon

    The Getty Center has a rather large complex. Although it closes before sunset most of the year, the late afternoon is the perfect time to wander its stunning gardens. An art display in itself, it’s easy to spend an hour walking around enjoying the maze-like greenery and complementary architecture.

    Morning

    Start your day at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. As a relatively new Hollywood-focused museum, it’s quite popular so visiting in the morning will help you beat the crowds.

    The Academy Museum is dedicated to the history and art of movies and features exhibits on everything from the evolution of movie technology to the magic of filmmaking. I loved seeing the museum’s Mount Rushmore backdrop from North by Northwest and their Orc Mask from The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King!

    Lunch

    Enjoy the Academy Museum’s restaurant, Fanny’s, or grab food across the street at Meyers Manx Cafe, which is located inside your next stop of the day: The Petersen Automotive Museum.

    Early Afternoon

    In the early afternoon, the Petersen holds more than 300 vehicles, including classic cars, hot rods, and race cars. I’m not the biggest car enthusiast, but absolutely love this museum! It’s fun, colorful, nostalgic and truly helped me view automobiles as pieces of art.

    Late Afternoon

    In the late afternoon, head back across the street to LACMA to peruse the museum’s impressive collection of artwork from the Americas, Asia, and Middle East.

    Sunset

    At sunset, don’t forget to stop by our city’s famous Urban Light installation just outside LACMA. If you time your day just right you can enjoy this art installation just as the lights are coming on and the sky is turning a pink-purple La La Land-esque color.

    Morning

    Known for a contemporary collection by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, and Jeff Koons, The Broad is a fun and somewhat quirky museum, a great way to set the tone for the rest of your day.

    My favorite work here is Roy Lichtenstein’s “Still Life with Green Vase”, but they also have amazing limited-time exhibits and two of Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms.

    Brunch or Lunch

    Take the nearby Angel’s Flight Railway down to Grand Central Market and enjoy brunch or lunch at one of them many stalls inside. My favorite picks? Eggslut, Ghost Sando Shop and Ramen Hood.

    Early Afternoon

    Take in more artwork at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Grand Avenue. MOCA Grand Avenue is the museum’s flagship location, with a stunning space designed by architect Arata Isozaki. It has pieces from Jackson Pollock and other famous contemporary artists.

    In the midst of Venice’s winter, a unique and enchanting phenomenon graces the city—acqua alta, where high tides from the canals flood the Floating City’s narrow streets.

    While it can be a hinderance – especially during more intense spells, acqua alta can also act as a playful nudge to be in the present moment. During the holidays in particular, the high-tide’s reflections of festive lights within Piazza San Marco take on a poignant beauty, embodying the resilience of a city that has learned to harmonize with the ebb and flow of its aquatic surroundings.

    Visit an Empty Doge’s Palace

    Being the off-season, Winter in Venice is the time to enjoy Venice’s most popular attractions like Doge’s Palace without the crowds. During my own winter visit, I had Doge’s Palace all to myself for a good 30 minutes by showing up right at opening on a weekday! If you want to experience the architecture and sights in a way that only Venetian royalty and nobility have, the winter months are undoubtedly the best time to do so.

    As a major city in a country renown for its master painters and sculptors, it should come as no surprise that Venice is home to some amazing art museums. And during the city’s coldest months of the year, its the easiest time to pry your eyes away from the beautiful canals outside and toward the wondrous works within.

    For modern art fans, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection showcases works accumulated by Peggy Guggenheim, the avid art collector and American heiress who lived in Venice for three decades. Stroll through the heiress’s old dining room, study and salons to admire work that spans from cubism to abstract expressionism. Likewise, Ca’ Pesaro is another modern art museum in Venice. Housed in a former baroque palace, the museum has works from Gustav Klimt and Auguste Rodin.

    For more historic pieces, the Gallerie dell’Accademia is a museum focusing on 13th – 17th century Venetian painters like Titian, Canaletto, and Bosch. Similarly, Museo Correr is focusing on art and artifacts from throughout Venice’s long history. With multiple works from Carpaccio and Bellini, there’s plenty of masterful pieces to see in this former royal-palace-turned-museum.

    Brighten Up The Grayest Days on Colorful Burano

    On a wintery day in Venice, a visit along the ferry to the vibrant island of Burano promises a burst of color amid the usually pale winter landscape. Originally painted to help the island’s fisherman navigate home through dense fog, the charming, pastel-hued houses lining the canals create a picturesque scene that stands out even under a grayest sky. And after getting lost in the rainbow of colors throughout Burano, take refuge in the warmth of the island’s local trattorias or the Burano Lace Museum.

    One ferry, or vaporetto, line runs from Venice to the island Burano: the 12. From Venice’s Fondamente Nove station, the journey along the 12 stops at Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello, Burano and Treporti. Time tables can be found on Venice’s ACTV website.

The wares here are adorably tucked inside bathtubs and gondolas, while one patio out back includes a photogenic staircase made up of old, damaged books that leads to a beautiful view of the neighboring canal.

    If you’re lucky, you may even spot one of the bookstore’s resident cats who like to lounge around various places inside the shop.

    Exploring Venice in late winter? While the Christmas decorations have come and gone, city’s annual Carnival festival is in full swing from late January to mid February. Originating in 1162 to celebrate a Venice military victory, the Carnival now famous for its pre-Lenten festivities and for its patrons’ elaborate costumes and masks. To take part, visit a mask-maker and costume store (Ca’ Del Sol is fantastic!) and then enjoy the events throughout the city.

    Time of Year

    Mendocino is one of those rare places that feels magical in just about every season.

    Every year from March to May, vibrant spring blooms grace the otherwise rugged and temperate coastline. These are especially beautiful around Mendocino Headlands State Park. And in March, Mendocino County has multiple Annual Whale Festivals!

    From June to August, Mendocino tourism does pick up, but it’s still possible to find solace and enjoy sunny summer days with minimal rain along its nature trails, or with a rented bike or canoe. Looking for something particularly unique to the area? Try sea cave kayaking in Van Damme State Park!

    From September to November, experience the beauty of fall with cool mornings, warm afternoons and pink sunsets over the ocean. Explore the scenic Navarro River tunnel of trees and avoid tourist crowds.

    And finally from December to February, escape harsh winter conditions and head to Mendocino for a snowless, yet cheerful holiday experience. It’s prime whale-watching season from November to April, offering a unique and magnificent opportunity to spot gray whales.

    Trip Length

    Mendocino village and the immediate nature reserves around town can easily be explored over a weekend, but if you’re hoping to add Fort Bragg, Anderson Valley or any other Mendocino County destinations to your itinerary, I’d plan for at least 3-5 days.

    How To Get There

    Mendocino County is located about 3 hours north of San Francisco and 2.5 hours northwest of Sonoma by car. Due to its unique and “off-the-grid” location, at least as far as California is concerned, the best way to reach Mendocino is by rental car. There are no trains, except for a few strictly short, tourist routes. Furthermore, the long distance from local airports means that there are few and far taxis and Ubers that will take you as far as Mendocino.

    How To Get Around

    Mendocino town is an incredibly small. After arrival, it’s fairly simple to get around by walking, bike rental, or if mobility is limited, a car. Mendocino also has plenty of street parking throughout town, though it can get quite packed during the summer months.

    If you’re planning to also visit Fort Bragg or Anderson Valley during your trip to Mendocino County, I highly recommend driving versus taking an Uber or Taxi. As a more remote town, it can be quite difficult to locate either option and cell reception can be spotty depending on the areas you’re visiting.

    Encircling the Village of Mendocino is one of the area’s main coastal wonders: Mendocino Headlands State Park.

    Offering three miles of scenic trails along cliffs, the State Park showcases sea arches, cliffside staircases and hidden grottos. It’s a haven for hikers, picnickers, sunbathers, and surfers. The park extends from north to south, ending at Big River Beach.

    I found walking the trails here just before sunset a truly enchanting experience. Gazing at the town perched atop the cliffs behind and savoring the salty ocean air ahead as the temperature and light gently faded away was a wonderfully peaceful moment that everyone should be able to experience at least once in their lifetime.

    Jug Handle State Natural Reserve

    Looking for peaceful forests and wondrous ocean views? Take a short drive north of Mendocino town to Jug Handle State Natural Reserve.

    Nestled along the rugged Mendocino Coast, Jug Handle State Natural Reserve has stunning ocean vistas, serene woodlands, and a 2.5-mile trek through half a million years of ecological evolution.

    The Ecological Staircase Trail within the reserve unveils five distinct wave-carved terraces transformed by continental glaciers, rising seas, and tectonic movements that shaped the land. It’s also not a bad place to enjoy an impromptu picnic!

    Glass Beach

    There is a long list of places around the world and even Mendocino that are more than meets the eye, and Glass Beach is probably at the top of that list.

    Walking around, the beach seems to have a rocky, yet ordinary appearance. But on closer inspection, it’s easy to see its hidden magic.

    What was once trash is now smooth and colorful seaglass mixed into the shoreline. An enchanting reminder of the power of the ocean and passing of time.

    Skunk Train

    A trip to Mendocino County isn’t complete without hopping aboard the historic Skunk Train in Fort Bragg.

    In operation since 1885, the Skunk Train has chugged through ancient redwood forests, over charming trestle bridges, into breathtaking tunnels, and through the captivating Noyo River canyon. It is one of many former logging and passenger locomotives that locals in the area nicknamed “Skunks” due to the unique odor their engines and stoves produced.

    For my visit, I stepped aboard the Skunk Train’s year-round line from Fort Bragg: the Pudding Creek Express. The journey takes visitors through Pudding Creek Estuary, which is home to blue herons and other unique birds. But I was most fascinated by the old-growth redwoods that appeared as we adventured deeper into the forest, eventurally making a stop at Glen Blair Junction and Bar! Here, riders can enjoy the magical sights and smells of the ancient woods next to a platform decorated with string lights and with a cocktail in hand.

    Russian Gulch State Park

    Nestled along the rugged California coastline, Russian Gulch State Park is one of Mendocino’s more famous natural gems. This state park was one of my favorites and has everything from lush forests, dramatic sea caves, and a mesmerizing beach.

    Hike along pristine trails, take in the stunning views of the photogenic Russian Gulch Bridge, or venture into the park’s charming picnic areas. With opportunities for camping, horseback riding, biking and more, Russian Gulch State Park offers an unforgettable outdoor experience.

    Temple of Kwan Tai

    A small, vibrantly-painted red and green building, the Temple of Kwan Tai is believed to be the oldest Taoist Temple in rural California. The building is believed to be dated back as far as 1854, though its documented history reaches only to 1883. Today it is the only remaining Taoist temple from this time period on the northern California coast and living evidence of Mendocino’s 19th Century Chinese community.

    Just south of Mendocino town, Van Damme State Park is perfect for those seeking a unique and active experience out in nature. Of course, Van Damme offers hiking trails, camping, a beautiful beach, and opportunities for diving, kayaking, and wildlife watching. But what makes it an incredible stop on any Mendocino adventure is its unique Pygmy Forest and opportunities for sea kayaking.

    Point Cabrillo Light Station

    Point Cabrillo Light Station is a well-preserved historic lighthouse in between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Beyond the iconic tower that has guided ships since 1909, the Light Station grounds also have panoramic areas to enjoy whale watching, picnic, and hike the cliffside.

    Perhaps the most charming part of Point Cabrillo, however, are the three restored Lightkeeper cottages on the property, the first of which acts as a period museum of a lightkeeper’s house in the 1930s. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking a place of serene beauty, Point Cabrillo Light Station is a coastal treasure.

    Ford House

    Built in 1854 by one of Mendocino’s logging-era founders, the Ford House is now the town’s Visitor Center and a museum filled with historic photos, tools, and relics. Inside its walls, a docent will share stories and information about redwood logging, local Native American history, gray whale migrations and the area’s unique flora and landscape.

    Picture this: you’re driving along a one-lane, winding country road on a brisk fall morning. A shroud of mist lightly touches the tops of the rugged, green mountains on either side of you, hovering just above the golden-flaked valleys you’re driving through. That was the view I was greeted with on my day trip to California’s Anderson Valley.

    Technically part of Mendocino County in its own right, Anderson Valley can easily be explored on a day trip from Mendocino village or Fort Bragg.     Point Arena

    Point Arena is a very small coastal village located 45 minutes south of Mendocino town. One of the village’s main draws is its beautiful 153 year old lighthouse, Point Arena Lighthouse. Visitors here can climbing the lighthouse tower and viewing the original Fresnel lens that lit the way for travelers to Point Arena as early as 1908.

    And don’t forget to visit Bowling Ball Beach, a unique tourist attraction named after a group of large spherical sandstone formations that are visible during low tide.

    How To Spend One Day in Anderson Valley, California – My Favorite Spots

    Picture this: you’re driving along a one-lane, winding country road on a brisk fall morning. A shroud of mist lightly touches the tops of the rugged, green mountains on either side of you, hovering just above the golden-flaked valleys you’re driving through. That was the view I was greeted with on my day trip to California’s Anderson Valley.

    Despite often being overshadowed by nearby Napa and Sonoma counties, Anderson Valley is a wonderful Northern California wine region and an enchanting place to see sprinkles of fall color from September to November. And I’m happy to say that my visit there was every bit the comfort-filled adventure I hoped it would be! So if you’re looking off-the-beaten-path charm, nature and wine, here’s everything I did and what I recommend doing for your own Anderson Valley travels:

    Wandering amongst Giants

    The first stop on my Anderson Valley Day Trip was to Hendy Woods State Park. Arriving just after opening hours, I found the pre-sunrise mist from my drive still lingering in the park like a soft blanket.

    An early morning silence surrounded me as I stepped onto the trail, only to be punctuated by the soft crunch of fallen leaves beneath my boots. Hiking solo, there’s a special intimacy with nature. You hear every whisper and feel every heartbeat of the forest. It had been a while since my last visit to a national or state park and I lingered a moment to take all that magic in.

    Once over and as special as that silence was, I turned on some music and began exploring the trail. I knew I could accidentally sneak up on mountain lions or black bears if I wasn’t careful so I planned to be as loud as possible in an effort to avoid contact. Plus, the idea of hiking in such a majestic place with The Lord of the Rings soundtrack was too good of an opportunity to pass up.

    The towering redwoods I encountered along the short All Access Trail, the Discovery Trail and the Upper Loop Trail stood like ancient sentinels, unchallenged by the passage of time. As the sun’s rays finally pierced the canopy above, the forest floor was painted in hues of gold, leaving me to wonder whether I was still hiking the Anderson Valley or the fantasy forest of Lothlorien.

    Every corner of this park told a story, and as I wandered deeper into the woods, I found fallen redwoods, hollowed out giants and even a family of black-tailed deer that didn’t seem too bothered by my presence. Overall, my enchanting encounters with the nature inside Hendy Woods State Park turned out to be the first epic chapter to a wonderful day in Anderson Valey.

    The Anderson Valley Wine Region is located about 2.5 hours by car from San Francisco and 45 minutes from Mendocino, California.

    Weather:

    Anderson Valley summers are warm, dry, and mostly clear while the winters are cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Temperatures are mild, varying from high 30s in the winter to low 80s in the summer.

    Just around the corner from Hendy Woods is Philo Apple Farm, a lovely year-round farm stand where visitors can purchase locally-grown apples, pears, ciders and jellies.

    Set up near a picturesque wooden building and garden, the farm stand held rows of apple bins, each with a small sign detailing the type and origin of its contents.

    While usually run on the honor system, a woman was working the counter during my visit, offering more details about the farm’s products and free cider and maple syrup samples! I ended up leaving with not only with a few King David and Philo Gold apples, but also a packet of dried pears.

    A Wonderful Tasting At Handley Cellars

    After grabbing my late-morning snacks at the Apple Farm, it was time for a wine tasting. For this, I journeyed over to the woman-founded, organic winery, Handley Cellars.

    The serenity of both Handley’s grounds and tasting room was palpable the moment I arrived for my reservation. Located on a hill above the main road, the estate overlooks a surrounding landscape of rolling vineyards and striking redwoods. And the property itself undoubtedly has the most picturesque tasting room in Anderson Valley, with a white wooden tower and a shaded garden patio, the latter of which I was able to enjoy my tasting at.

    To my pleasant surprise, I was Handley’s first visitor for the day. This made the shaded patio, surrounded by the winery’s beautiful garden to one side and the lovely view to the other side feel even more tranquil.

    My visit was facilitated by Derek, a tasting associate who I learned is also a musician and photographer living near the coast. With each pour, Derek shared colorful anecdotes about each vintage, taking me through the delicate notes of their Pinot Noirs all the way to their more vibrant of their Gewürztraminers.

    Had I not been traveling solo, I definitely would have left with three, but opted for just one bottle that I could share with the coworkers I’d be visiting in just a few days time!

    Exploring Philo

    In the early afternoon, I visited the center of Philo, one of the main towns on Highway 128, for some walkable adventures. My first stop: Lemon’s Philo Market. I ordered a custom sandwich from the deli counter and bought a box of crackers to take with me on my next tasting at Domaine Anderson.

    I chose to visit Domaine Anderson primarily because of its recognizable and biodynamic offerings. Arriving at the tasting room, I couldn’t resist the allure of sitting on its patio in the comfortable September weather. As I took my seat and unpacked my sandwich and crackers, I was greeted by the cheerful wine tasting associate who would lead me through my tasting.

    She poured the first wine on the tasting menu, sharing a tidbit about its origin before stepping back to let me savor it. Midway through the tasting, a gust of wind nearly sent my napkin through the vineyard, eliciting a shared chuckle between us. It was lovely to be able to sample the few varietals I hadn’t previously had in this relaxed atmosphere.

    Afterward, I carefully crossed the street to The Madrones, an Italian-inspired enclave with an intimate hotel, a farm-to-table restaurant and lovely boutiques. Here, I visited Sun & Cricket, a curated shop full of books, gifts and more. While perusing the shelves, I found a unique gold magnifying glass that I knew I had to take home.

    Next up on my Anderson Valley trip was Boonville, the second main town off of Highway 128. I was particularly excited to stop by Boonville’s Farmhouse Mercantile, a haven of artisanal treasures, where a set of olive and cream kitchen towels caught my eye and quickly became a must-have.

    A bit down the street, Disco Ranch beckoned me with a gourmet selection of tapas, wines and snacks. There, I snagged a rich olive mix spread, imagining how it would perfectly complement the crackers from my earlier stop. Even in brief moments, Boonville served up delightful finds, adding layers to my day’s adventure.

    Ending The Day at Maple Creek Winery

    Finally, around mid-afternoon I made it to my last stop in the Anderson Valley: Maple Creek Winery. The winery is home to Artevino Wines, a boutique family-owned natural wine label.

    Here, I was able to meet the winery’s owner, Tom, who’s third generation Portuguese. It was so special to hear about his passion for his land and wine.

    Autumn – that magical time when nature dons its most vibrant hues, and the air carries a hint of misty allure. This season, my wanderlust beckoned me north, and I found myself embarking on a three-day trip to California’s Mendocino County. While Southern California has its charm, there’s an understated elegance and wild beauty to Mendocino that brings out my inner adventurer. While my first day in Mendocino County was focused to popular town activities, I spent my second day working my way down the coast, exploring nature and local shops.

    My second day in Mendocino County began at the famous Glass Beach in Fort Bragg. Visiting under a veil of an early morning mist, the beach was carpeted with countless colorful glass pebbles, polished to perfection between the area’s relentless waves and rugged landscape. Each fragment shared a bit of the beach’s history – thousands of small stories, waiting to be told.

    Working my way down the coast, my next stop was the Point Cabrillo Light Station. About a half mile walk from the parking lot, the lighthouse and living quarters were just as picturesque as I’d hoped. The vast expanse of the ocean on one side contrasted beautifully with the verdant cliffside and cream, red and brown landmark buildings on the other.

    Before arriving back in Mendocino town for lunch, I opted for one more stop in nature: Russian Gulch State Park. In all its autumnal glory, the park felt comforting, invigorating and endlessly enchanting – a magical place to relax for a bit and enjoy some of the warm, spicy cider I had packed earlier that morning.

    Around early afternoon my stomach finally rumbled, leading me to the doors of the Trillium Cafe, a historic home turned restaurant. This quaint eatery served dishes that were a delightful blend of local flavors. I enjoyed the warm Local Rock Cod Fish Tacos – the perfect way to satiate my hunger!

    My journey continued as I stepped into the Kelley House Museum. My favorite types of museums are ones that provide a glimpse into the daily life of a person in history – what did they wear or eat, how did they sleep, work or play. Every artifact and memento inside the Kelley House Museum echoed tales of Victorian home and family life. I felt like I had taken a step back in time, an altogether unique and captivating experience.

    After viewing all the vintage clothes, home goods and accessories inside the Kelley House, I knew it was time to shop for some of my own. My wanderings around town led me to a charming boutique, The Study Club. Here, I discovered Mendocino Candle Co. and ended up buying a luxury, hand poured candles from their local collection: Big River Beach. With the energetic scent of seaweed, salt water and fresh ocean air, I knew it would bring me fond memories of this trip for months to come.

    Later that afternoon, I opted for one more big adventure along the coast, Point Arena Lighthouse. Located an hour’s drive south of the town of Mendocino, the 153 year old lighthouse was special in that it allowed me an opportunity to climb its tower and to also view the original Fresnel lens that lit the way for travelers as early as 1908.

    I ended my day around sunset, opting for the comfort of pad see ew ordered straight to my hotel room after a long day of exploring. The whispers of a new day of adventures in Mendocino County’s Anderson Valley baiting me to get a good night’s sleep before morning.

    The distinct forest-like scent of eucalyptus. A surprising, yet calming presence during my drive up the rugged Northern California coast to Mendocino County, a small Victorian-era hub full of enchanting boutiques, bespoke art galleries, and warm restaurants. While the scent was an invitation, the promise of peaceful exploration over the next three days was the real lure. And so, my first day in Mendocino County was dedicated to exploring the popular town attractions around both Mendocino and Fort Bragg.

    The weather for this couldn’t have been more ideal. Waking up to a misty morning, it felt as if I was amidst a cloud. I bundled up in a thick sweater and warm coat to watch the sunrise over the historic Ford House. Watching as the golden rays cut through the blueish-purple haze around me was a sight I won’t soon forget.

    After the mist lifted, the town’s beauty gleamed under the rising sun with temperatures lifting to the 70s. I enjoyed a hearty brunch at MacCallum House Restaurant, a former Victorian home turned bed-and-breakfast, before exploring about town.

    My footsteps led me through the town’s winding streets, taking in its unique character and historic architecture. I admired the Blair House Inn, which tv fans may recognize as Angela Lansbury’s house from Murder, She Wrote. I stopped by The Temple of Kwan Tai, believed to be rural California’s oldest Taoist temple. And of course I returned to the Victorian-era Ford House for a guided tour and history lesson of Mendocino’s lumber history.

    Perhaps my favorite spot about town was in a small blue and white building near the Headlands cliffs with a green sign reading Mendocino Jams & Preserves. Here I sampled and took home a local specialty, a jar of Olallieberry Jam! Tart but balanced, tasting of blackberries mixed with raspberries.

    Walking around, the fresh aromas from the local cafes were hard to ignore. And soon enough, I was lured toward The Brickery, a garden pizzeria where I indulged in a wood-fired veggie pizza and an iced tea. There, I enjoyed the sounds of a local musician performing in the garden before making my way up 15 minutes up the coast to Fort Bragg for a train adventure.

    I stepped back in time in Fort Bragg by hopping aboard the Skunk Train, a historic locomotive taking me deep into Mendocino County’s surrounding redwoods. Here, I got to visit a hidden away bar decorated in string lights beneath the old growth – a truly magical experience.

    After making the return journey, I felt a like a little adventure along the coast was in order before dinner. And so, I hiked – and snacked – atop the rugged cliffs of Jug Handle State Reserve overlooking the Pacific. With waves crashing onto the rocks and hidden beaches below, Mendocino promised and delivered views that took my breath away.

    As evening drew and the temperature descended, I made my way back to Mendocino town and found a cozy spot with tapas and natural wine, Fog Bottle Shop. There, I sipped orange wine and enjoyed some Fishwife Cantabrian Anchovies in EVOO and a vegan cheese plate while watching the sun dip beyond the horizon, painting the skies with hues of pink and purple. The chilly evening breeze carried whispers of my day’s adventure around the Pacific, as a crescent moon grew brighter in the sky, wrapping up my first day in Mendocino with a promise of more explorations to come.

    In 2021, I was lucky enough to spend a whole week and a half visiting Cusco and the surrounding Sacred Valley in Peru. While there, I got to know a few neighborhoods quite a bit – even treating myself to a little photography tour! The city is so beautiful, but there were a few spots that particularly caught my eye for their cinematic flair and aesthetic.     Mirador de Plaza Sán Cristobal

    Located at in the San Cristobal neighborhood, Mirador de Plaza Sán Cristobal offers sweeping views over Cusco’s Centro Histórico.

    Neighborhood: Sán Cristobal

    Secret Tip:

    Mirador de Plaza Sán Cristobal is located at the top of a steep hill. Visit this spot first thing in the morning while it’s still cool out and work your way to other spots downhill from there

    Siete Borreguitos

    The top of the stairs at Calle Siete Borreguitos in Cusco, Peru

    Another dreamy spot located at the top of Sán Cristobal is Calle Siete Borreguitos. The steep “Seven Lambs” street was named for the many farmers who would pass through this way with their cattle, llamas and sheep.

    It’s also one of Cusco’s seven streets whose name literally begins with “seven”, a sacred number to the Incas linked to the rainbow. The street is idyllic in that you’ll pass rows of potted plants dotting both its walls and stairs as you ascend or descend into the city.

    Neighborhood: Sán Cristobal

    Secret Tip:

    After Siete Borreguitos take a 3-minute walk over to the Sapantiana Aqueduct! Like most of Cusco’s historic sites, the aqueduct is a Spanish colonial construction built on top of a sacred Incan site, known in Quechua as Huaca.

    Calle Carmen Alto

    Arguably a major street in Cusco’s San Blas neighborhood, Calle Carmen Alto is a picture perfect street that begins at the top of Calle Carmen Bajo, near Plaza San Blas.

    Walking through, you’ll pass bright blue doors and windows set against the famous white stucco buildings that San Blas is known for. Clothing stores, vegan restaurants, small hotels and art boutiques mainly take up residence here – many waving Pride flags year-round.

    Carmen Alto ultimately ends right in front of L’atelier Café Concept, a coffee house offering sightseers and photographers with a unique blue balcony viewpoint that sits dead center over the beautiful street below.

    Sacsayhuamán

    Located in the Sán Cristobal neighborhood on the outskirts of Cusco, Sacsayhuamán is one of the main tourist highlights in Cusco – and for good reason. The site is actually a former Incan citadel with stone walls so giant I left feeling absolutely mesmerized. The magic and beauty of this site is only amplified by the fact that the Incas had such precise building techniques that they didn’t even need mortar to hold these large stone walls together.

    Qoricancha Temple

    A great place to view for its beauty and tour for its history, I was absolutely blown away by Qoricancha Temple. This is definitely one of the best spots in Cusco’s Centro Histórico to view both Incan and Spanish architecture together. Additionally, for those trying to avoid hiking too far up one of Cusco’s steep hills, Qoricancha’s height allows for picturesque views over part of the city.

    Benches at Calle Tocuyeros

    Located on Calle Tocuyeros near Cusco’s Twelve Angle Stone are two wooden benches surrounded by potted plants and cacti. Not only is this a great spot to rest after climbing up Cusco’s many steep hills, but it’s also a great somewhat tucked-away spot for photos!

    Plaza San Blas is small, but central square in the neighborhood. It contains a central stone fountain, an old church and multiple green benches to rest your feet on after all the climbing you’ll do throughout town.

    In addition, this beautiful spot acts as a gateway of sort to many of the neighborhood’s streets and alleyways – this is a great spot to both start and come back to, to ensure you never get too lost!

    Neighborhood: San Blas

    Tambomachay

    Similar to most Inca sites, the exact function of the Tambomachay ruins is unknown. However, because the site is made up of connected aqueducts, canals and waterfalls that has earned it the Spanish name, “the Bathroom of the Inca”.

    This was one of my favorite Inca sites in Cusco for its unique features and lack of crowds!

    Qenqo

    Qenqo is an Incan archeological site that’s usually visited in tandem with Sacsayhuamán, Tambomachay and Puca Pucara on “4 Ruins” Tours.

    The site is divided into two parts: Big Qenqo, which can be explored today, and Small Qenqo, where visitors are prohibited.

    It’s believed that Big Qenqo was used by the Incas as a place of worship. The site contains a former astronomical observatory, sacrifice room and amphitheater.

    Plaza De Armas

    If you’re visiting Cusco, you will undoubtedly walk through Plaza De Armas, Cusco’s main square. While it’s easy to get swept up in the restaurants, shops and crowds, try stopping by in the morning before most of the businesses have opened up for the day.

    Some of the city’s most spectacular facades are in the square and can best be enjoyed at this hour, like that of the Cusco Cathedral and Iglesia de la Companía de Jesús (Church of the Society of Jesus).

    Alternatively, you can try your luck scoring one of the coveted tables overlooking the main square at either Morena or Limo restaurants for lunch or dinner.

    Puca Pucara

    Not far from Tambomachay is Puca Pucara, a site that’s believed to be former Inca military fort as its strategic location would allow soldiers a 360 degree view of the valley and entrance to Cusco.

    Another notable feature of this large site is that it had multiple rooms that could allow opportunities of rest to weary Inca trackers and explorers.

    A hidden gem in the heart of Centro Histórico, Convento La Merced has striking murals, blue-roofed porticos and a vibrant green gate that can all be explored without the crowds. Definitely one of Cusco’s most unique and brilliant places to see.

    Plaza Tricentenario

    Located near Rucula and Organika restaurants, Plaza Tricentenario is certainly one of Cusco’s easier viewpoints to reach on foot – and it also happens to be a hot spot on Instagram.

    Not only does the Plaza offer sweeping views of Cusco’s Cathedral and Plaza De Armas, but it also has a reflective fountain and two pairs of back-to-back benches to help make any rest or photography stopa bit more enchanting.

    Plazoleta de las Nazarenas is home to Cusco’s Pre-Columbian Art Museum and the 5-star Inkaterra La Casona and Palacio Nazarenas, A Belmond Hotel.

    A Day at Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood: The Ultimate Behind-the-Scenes Experience

    As someone who used to work in the film industry, I’ve seen my fair share of backlots and can attest that visiting an entertainment studio is a can’t miss Los Angeles travel experience. Recently, I revisited one such studio with a friend from out-of-town and was reminded of all about the wonder and excitement of movie magic.

    Here’s my behind-the-scenes visit to the Warner Bros Studio Tour Hollywood and everything you need to know if you’re planning a visit there:

    History and Why Visit

    Considered one of the “Big 5” major film studios, Warner Bros Studios was founded in 1923 by Harry, Albert, Sam and Jack Warner. The Brothers Warner quickly helped the studio break new ground in the film industry by introducing the world to the first-ever “talkie”, or movie with sound: The Jazz Singer (1927).

    For over nearly a century since, the studio’s 110-acre lot in Burbank, California has been the birthplace of iconic franchises, memorable characters, and technological breakthroughs. Its expansive backlot and soundstages have set the stage for a multitude of worlds—from the streets of New York in Blade Runner (1982) to the charming Stars Hollow town square in Gilmore Girls (2000-2007).

    Even today, the Warner Bros lot is still a functional studio where visitors can see real film and TV sets as well as potentially bump into some of entertainment’s most popular directors, writers and actors.

    So whether you’re a film buff, a pop culture enthusiast, or simply curious, a visit to Warner Bros Studio Tour is a great addition to any LA travel itinerary.

    Four Main Ticket Options

    Today, you can visit the studio, exploring the outdoor sets on its backlot, entering sound stages in its front lot and enjoying multiple movie-themed exhibits and photo ops via four tour options:

    Studio Tour – The base tour package is 3 hours long and is offered in both English and Spanish. It costs $70 per person* and is split into two main portions:

    • 1 Hour Guided Tour
    • 2 Hour Self-Guided Tour

    Classics Tour – An alternative base tour option. The guided portion of this 3 hour option focuses on 1923-1970 productions and history. Tickets are $70 per person*:

    • 1 Hour Guided Tour, with a historical focus on 1923-1970
    • 2 Hour Self-Guided Tour

    Studio Tour Plus – This tour lasts 4 hours total and includes the same offerings as the base tour plus a complimentary lunch at Central Perk Café, beverages & pastries and an exclusive screening room. Tickets are $150 USD per person*:

    • 2 Hours Guided Tour, including Complimentary Beverages & Pastries
    • 2 Hours Self-Guided Tour, including Lunch at Central Perk Café

    Deluxe Tour – The ultimate tour experience. This tour includes most of the Studio Tour Plus offerings as well as a visit to the WB Prop Department and a fine dining lunch experience at the Studio Commissary. Tickets are $300 USD per person* and the tour lasts 6 hours:

    • 3 Hours Guided Tour, including a visit to the WB Prop Department
    • 1 Hour Lunch at the Studio Commissary Fine Dining Room
    • 2 Hours Self-Guided Tour, including a snack at Central Perk Café

    Transportation + Parking

    The Warner Bros Studio Tour is located on their main lot in Burbank, California. The best way to get there is by car as their main address leads to their parking structure.

    Alternatively, you can arrive by Uber or Lyft as there is also walk-up access to the visitor center from Warner Blvd.

    What To Expect on The Studio Tour

    Arrival at the Visitor Center

    I visited the Warner Bros Studio Tour with my friend, Kate, while she was visiting from out of town. Our tour started on a glamorous note in the visitor center, which is part Starbucks, part gift shop, part ticketing office and part parking structure.

    Being so soon after the release of the Barbie (2023) movie, we were excited to see the costumes that Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and many others in the film wore on full display in the lobby.

    It was wonderful to see how complex and intricate they were – not just in Barbieland, but also in real life.

    Historic and Epic Welcomes

    After snapping a few quick pictures and showing our tour tickets, we made our way to our first official stop just one room over: the tour’s Storytelling Showcase. A timeline and a few key historical items dotted the walls, providing context into the Warner Bros family, the studio and its various productions over the years.

    My favorite item in this introductory room was undoubtedly seeing Jack Warner’s personal, leather-bound scripts for films like Mildred Pierce (1945) and Oceans Eleven (1960).

    Making our way towards the end of the room, we were split into 3 lines with the other guests on tour and brought into a screening room. There, we saw a 5 minute welcome trailer that included clips from some of the studio’s biggest blockbusters and shoutouts from stars like Jason Momoa, Kevin Hart and Gal Gadot. In true trailer fashion, the video had amazing score and an epic tone that left us excited to experience the lot firsthand!

    The Guided Backlot Tour

    After the video, a guide picked up Kate, myself and a few other guests, leading us over to a 4-row golf cart that would be taking us around for the 1 hour guided portion of the tour.

    Our guide drove us through multiple backlot sets, each with its own history and charm. First we saw the Jungle and the Lagoon, the latter of which was filled and used as the cemetery from The Nun (2018). My horror-loving heart was pounding!

    Next, we drove through Warner Village, a modern set that’s home of many locations from Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017). Visiting this part of the backlot, we really got the sense at just how much the buildings are modified for each production.

    Doorknobs, light fixtures and more are removed after each production wraps so that the backlot sets can remain blank canvases for future films and shows.

    The most exciting part about the guided backlot tour, however, was just coming up: walking around and into former film sets in Any Town, USA! Among these sets were the infamous gazebo and Lorelai and Rory’s house from Gilmore Girls, both of which made me want to grab a cup of coffee from Luke’s Diner in my Chilton-inspired tour outfit!

    After our stroll through Any Town, USA, we took a trip down New York Street, which we learned was used in many of WB’s iconic films including The Last Samurai (2003) and The Artist (2011).

    Other highlights I loved seeing on this portion of the guided tour included the cafe where Emma Stone works in La La Land (2016) and Batman (1966-1968) courthouse.

    An All American Soundstage

    After touring the backlot’s exterior sets, our guide took us to the front lot, which is known to house the studio’s soundstages.

    Here, we visited the set for All American (2018-2023), literally stepping inside the home of Coach Baker, played by Taye Diggs. To avoid leaks and spoilers for this show and other active shows on the lot, the studio has a strict no cameras or cellphones policy on this part of the tour. What I can tell you though was how just how detailed the house was, even more so than real-lifel model homes. There were only main things that gave it away as a set:

    1. It’s backyard “pool” was only 1-2 feet deep.
    2. The faux-house doesn’t have any plumbing, so the sink’s drain isn’t functional!
    3. There’s both loads of camera equipment and, of course, the soundstage walls surrounding Baker’s house.

    The Marvels of Stage 48

    After our All American set visit, it was time for the the self-guided portion of the tour. Starting at Stage 48, we walked into an immersive theme park-like soundstage perfect for all types movie and tv buffs, but especially for fans of Friends (1994-2004). From the Central Perk Café – where I didn’t share my food – to a store filled with show-inspired merch that had Kate quoting “Oh. My. God.“, we can attest that Friends fans will love this part of the tour.

    Also inside Stage 48 was a one-way walkthrough exhibit showcasing some fun Hollywood photo-ops, costumes and props. We laughed and took photos on “rooms” inspired by The Big Bang Theory (2007-2019) and Friends. But what especially caught my eye here were the classic costumes from Casablanca (1942) and My Fair Lady (1964)! Seeing the outfits previously worn by Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn left me completely starstruck!

    And little did I know at the time, but the fun surprises weren’t over yet. Walking around the corner, we found a large VFX section with interactive displays that revealed how technology has shaped the movies we know and love today.

    There were fun video ops where visitors could “ride” a Nimbus 2000 and “drive” the Batmobile bike, but I was thrilled with this room for an entirely different reason.

    Kate and I had the best time goofing around with camera angles and proportions at an interactive set up inspired by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012). We laughed so hard, going back-and-forth pretending to be Bilbo and Gandalf sitting across from each other in “Bilbo’s kitchen”! An unexpected, but welcome, party indeed.

    The last major section in Stage 48’s walkthrough exhibit was its sound area, which also featured a quick 10-minute show. The Art of Sound show demonstrated the film editing process using a scene from Gravity (2013). It was exciting to see how the dialogue lines, SFX and music came together through sound editing to create such a heart-pounding and cinematic moment!

    Friends Fountain

    Leaving Stage 48, Kate and I got back onto a golf cart and were driven over to the iconic Friends Fountain. Relocated from another part of the lot, it now sits in the heart of the Any Town, USA alongside a fiberglass orange sofa – a fun photo-op that perfectly captures all the nostalgia that the tour offers.

    Iconic Fandoms

    After the Fountain, we drove over to the most exciting stop on our tour – a building with exhibits for Game of Thrones (2011-2019), the DC Universe, Harry Potter (2001-2010), the studio’s awards! From interactive Wonder Woman: 1984 (2020) and Aquaman (2018) photo ops and to genuine Game of Thrones costumes (yes, Daenerys and Missandei’s dresses were there!), it was incredible. We definitely felt like we’d entered into the different worlds from the franchises on display.

    For Potterheads, there’s even a step-by-step interactive exhibit that takes you from “living” under the Dursley’s stairs to receiving your Hogwarts letter, getting sorted, and attending a potions class. This Ravenclaw can attest that it was a magical experience, indeed!

    Before exiting, we also marveled at a few of the Academy Awards and Emmys that Warner Bros’ has won throughout its history. There’s not many on display, as most are located elsewhere on the lot or with talent, but it’s still fun to take a look, especially if you’ve never seen one of these awards in person before.

    When we reached the gift shop, I couldn’t resist buying not one, but two “Luke’s Diner” shirts, being a huge Gilmore Girls fan. A perfect wrap to the perfect day!

    Movie Magic

    The experiences I’ve written about above specifically pertain to the base studio tour package, which Kate and I loved! But of course, your experience can vary depending on which of the four ticket options you choose from.

    In any case, if you’re in LA and want to experience some Hollywood movie magic, I cannot recommend a visit to the Warner Bros Studio Tour enough!
