11 Stunning Game Of Thrones Filming Locations In Girona, Spain
Girona, Spain – my favorite place in all of Catalonia and a dream destination for any Game of Thrones fan. During Season 6 of the show, this charming medieval city transformed into both Westeros and Essos, primarily doubling as the filming location for King’s Landing and Braavos, respectively. Even years later, it’s hard not to imagine Arya Stark sprinting past or Jaime Lannister making an imposing entrance while wandering old town. Visiting Girona truly feels like traversing Seven Kingdoms and beyond so join me as I take you through the 11 Stunning Game of Thrones Filming Locations In Girona, Spain:

Girona Cathedral as the Great Sept of Baelor
Girona Cathedral, with its jaw-dropping staircase, doubled as the Great Sept of Baelor in King’s Landing during Season 6. This is where Jaime Lannister confronts the High Sparrow in a scene brimming with tension and that ultimately leads to the wildfire explosion that kills Queen Margaery Tyrell. Standing at the foot of the Baroque stairs, I could practically hear the clinking of armor and Jaime’s defiant voice echoing off the stone walls.
Try to visit in the early morning when the light filters beautifully over the façade, and the crowds are minimal.
Address: Pl. de la Catedral
Entry Cost: 7.5 Euro/per person*
Secret Tips:
Climbing these stairs is a workout – literally. When I was visiting, I saw no less than 4 runners climbing the stairs Rocky-style to get their hearts racing. That said, the view from the top is worth every step!
If mobility is a challenge, there is also a path along the right side of the church from Plaça dels Apòstols that avoids this staircase.

Arab Baths as the Braavos Bath House
The Arab Baths are as atmospheric in real life as they were on screen, where Arya Stark trained (and sparred) with the Waif during her Faceless Men journey in Braavos. Walking through the dimly lit interior, I felt like I’d stumbled onto Arya’s secret training ground. The architecture, with its domed roof and columns, feels like stepping back in time.

Ferran el Catòlic Street and Archaeological Walk as the Braavos Port
Just outside the Arab Baths is Ferran el Catòlic Street and the Passeig Arqueològic de Girona, or Girona’s Archaeological Walk. This stretch of Girona was a pivotal location for the Braavos port market where Arya tries to secure passage to leave the city. It’s easy to recognize where all the market stands once stood in during filming and I loved being able to walk down the same set of stairs that Arya once strolled down.

Plaça dels Jurats as the Braavos Theater
Remember Arya sitting in the audience of a Braavosi play, watching a satirical retelling of Westeros’ political drama? That faux-play was filmed under the archways along the edge of in Plaça dels Jurats, an open-air square that now hosts real-life performances and events.
Address: Plaça dels Jurats
Entry Cost: Free most days, but tickets may be required on festival and performance days*
Secret Tip:
Be sure to check Girona’s event calendar before your visit. Watching a play here is the closest you’ll get to reliving Arya’s experience.

Galligants Bridge as Arya’s Bridge Viewpoint in Braavos
Galligants Bridge is a small arching bridge built over the Galligants waterway running through Old Town. This quiet, picturesque bridge appears briefly in Season 6 when Arya looks out over one of the sides and toward a large sculpture of a soldier towering over the entrance to the port of Braavos. It’s here where she is also stabbed by a girl wearing an old woman’s face.

Sant Pere de Galligants Interior as the Library of Oldtown
Perhaps one of the most peaceful filming locations to visit on this list is Sant Pere de Galligants. The interior of the 12th century Romanesque monastery appeared in the series as the Library of Oldtown where Samwell Tarly studies to become a maester. This was one of my favorite places to visit in Girona as this filming location has some real-life parallels to its Game of Thrones counterpart.
Just like the Library of Oldtown was the center of knowledge for the great masters of Ponent, Sant Pere de Galligants is home to Catalonia’s Museum of Archaeology and is full of treasures from the area’s Roman period.

Entry Cost: 7 Euros/person*

Moving further on insider Sant Pere de Galligants, you’ll stumble onto the monastery’s cloister. This space doubled as the King Landing’s Cloister for Olenna Tyrell.
Address: Carrer de Santa Llúcia, 8
Entry Cost: 7 Euros/person, but tickets to see the interior (the Library of Oldtown) include cloister access*

For ease of entry to Spain’s religious sites, it’s best to dress conservatively: cover shoulders and knees, wear closed-toed shoes and avoid hats and swimwear.
If visiting during the hot summer months, a shawl or scarf can quickly provide extra coverage if needed!

The Rise of Sant Domènec as the Braavos Market
The Rise of Sant Domènec, also known as Pujada de Sant Domènec, played a key role in Arya’s heart-pounding escape from the Waif in Episode 8 of Season 6. As I walked up them, I couldn’t help but imagine Arya, weaving her way through this steep, narrow path and knocking over a basket of oranges. The ancient walls framing the stairs make it feel like the perfect place for an intense chase scene!

Bisbe Josep Cartañà Street as Arya’s Alms Street in Braavos
Bisbe Josep Cartañà Street was transformed into the Braavosi streets where Arya lived as a temporarily blinded beggar during her training with the Faceless Men. This is where she endured her toughest trials, begging for coins while honing her heightened senses. The Waif also attacked her here, sparking the series of events that led Arya to reclaim her identity.

Carrer Sant Llorenç
as Arya’s Escape Route in Braavos
This stretch of Girona was a pivotal location for Arya’s heart-stopping chase scene with the Waif. I walked along the Carrer Sant Llorenç, imagining Arya darting past archways and leaping over obstacles along the stairs in her desperate bid for survival. The maze-like layout of these streets made me appreciate just how intense filming those scenes must have been!

Bonus: Castell de Santa Florentina as Horn Hill
Located about 45 minutes outside Girona, Castell de Santa Florentina is a breathtaking medieval castle that served as Horn Hill, the ancestral home of Samwell Tarly. This is where Sam introduced Gilly and baby Sam to his stern father, Randyll Tarly, and kind-hearted mother, Melessa, in one of Season 6’s quieter but emotionally charged moments. The castle’s rich history and beautifully preserved structure made it a perfect fit for the grandeur of House Tarly.
