How To Unlock Magical Travel Moments: 5 Things I Did In Lisbon
I talk a lot about magical travel moments online – but what are they really? For me, they’re unique experiences that occur during a journey. They create a sense of wonder that transcend the ordinary aspects of everyday life and leave you with a lasting impression that you can remember for years to come. These moments can take various forms and can be different for each person, as they are often deeply personal and subjective. They can be as simple as discovering a hidden gem, as exciting as reaching a personal milestone or as serendipitous as unexpectedly connecting with another person.
While magical travel moments can’t be planned, I’m a firm believer that you still have to be mindfully open in order to experience them. Here are ways that I unlocked my own magical travel moments on a recent adventure in Lisbon in hopes that I can inspire you to travel and create your own magic too:

Embraced The Early Mornings
There’s something inexplicably beautiful about exploring a city during the early hours of the morning. As the first rays of sunlight peek over the horizon, streets that are usually teeming with activity become a blank canvas waiting to be awakened.
Knowing I would experience some jet lag regardless of how early or late I woke up, I purposely set my alarm earlier than most, in hopes of experiencing a few magical mornings in Lisbon. And luckily, the Portuguese capital did not disappoint.
The morning air was crisp and fresh, igniting my senses and stirring my taste for adventure. With every step, I became an explorer, discovering the untold stories residing in the city’s uncluttered passages and hidden corners.
Iconic landmarks, like Belem Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, seemed to whisper their own secrets of Lisbon’s past and their promises for the future to come.
Those early mornings, draped in their hushed tranquility, quickly became my personal sanctuary in Portugal, allowing me a glimpse into Lisbon’s raw and unfiltered charm.

Created A “Side Quest”
Thinking About Getting Your Own Antique Azulejo?
I ended up buying a 16th century and a 17th century tile from Authentica Antiguidades in the Alfama neighborhood.

Before arriving in Lisbon, I knew I wanted to look for an antique Portuguese azulejo, or ceramic tile. And instead of trying to scour the internet for the best place to buy one, I decided to create a real-life “side quest” for myself.
While my primary goal in Lisbon was to embrace Portuguese culture through its history and food, I created an impromptu adventure for myself: scouring the city for the perfect tile to take home.
The search for this treasure encouraged me to ask locals questions, walk down just one more street and wander the city even longer. In turn, I discovered a few more hidden gems and experienced a handful of magical travel moments throughout Lisbon that I otherwise wouldn’t have. And when I eventually found not one, but two beautiful tiles, the thrill of my discovery made both pieces and my overall experience all the more worthwhile.

Said Yes To Detours
When it comes traveling, I always make sure to leave plenty of extra time for unexpected stops and detours. And, more importantly, I allow myself the luxury of dreamily perusing shops, wine bars and hidden corners other spots I might not normally have the funds or time for.
This doesn’t mean I prioritize shopping over my travel budget or disregard any prior commitments I have, but rather I allow myself to be more open to the fun foods, uniques experiences and memorable souvenirs I might find along the way.
During my last few days in Lisbon, I experienced a magical travel moment doing exactly that. While Ubering to a dinner reservation across town, I began chatting with my driver, an older Portuguese man who I quickly learned had two daughters living in California. After hearing that I wouldn’t be in Lisbon for much longer, he asked if I could spare a minute more so he could share his favorite miradouro, or viewpoint in the city. We were only two blocks away after all. Normally, if I were at home, I might’ve turned this offer down because of the time, but feeling both safe and curious, I decided to give into the adventure.
Soon enough, I was hopping out of the car with my purse and running up to the miradouro, viewing the glowing city below under a slow, pink and orange sunset. The viewpoint was a bit busy, given the time of day, but perhaps still more special than any of the less crowded views I’d seen around Lisbon so far. The significance of having this place shared with me because of a chance encounter with someone I had just meant meant all the world.

Indulged in A Hobby or Collection
Another detour I found myself on was when I stumbled upon Art Gallery & Atelier by Stephan Zaporozhan, a lovely gallery outside of Castelo de São Jorge.
You see, I have a weakness for unique pieces of art, beautiful hardcover books and local knickknacks, a weakness that’s made even stronger by travel. So when I first spotted the shop, I knew I had to head inside and see if there were any pieces I wanted to add to my collection back home.
I expected to find a piece or two that I would like, but I did not expect the personal experience that followed. Within about 3 minutes of stepping foot inside the gallery, I found a charming watercolor of one of Lisbon’s famous yellow trams gliding past a purple jacaranda tree, which were in full bloom during my trip. I immediately knew that this was the piece meant for me, a perfect Lisbon souvenir.
Bringing my desired purchase to the register, I then noticed a half completed canvas and an open paint palette and realized I was about to meet the shop’s artist, Stephan Zaporozhan. A quiet, yet kind sort, I was able to get to know him and and the gallery’s shopkeeper, Dasha.
Both were so welcoming, sharing a great passion for the shop and knowledge of the city. Talking to them felt like talking with family and that comfort almost had me forget I was even in a foreign country at all. Looking back, I’m even more thankful for my “hobby” of collecting art from my travels. This piece will always remind me of not just my time in Lisbon, but the lovely personalities I met there.

Braved New Environments + Conversations
Traveling solo is one of the easiest ways to become adept at talking to and forming meaningful connections with new people. Whether it’s striking up a chat with fellow travelers on a train or seeking recommendations from locals at a cafe, solo travel forces you to overcome social awkwardness and meet others.
Over time, that’s certainly been the case for me and now, it’s something I actively seek out on my trips. While scoping out Lisbon’s natural wine scene, I stumbled upon La Di Da Di Wines. And it just so happened that the day I visited was also the last day the wine bar would be open so they were having a closing block party.
It was an interesting turn of events so I decided to roll with it and stay for the wine and music. For the first half hour or so, I chatted with a few polite groups – all locals and/or friends of the owners. The crowd was having fun, but because the party was geared toward the bar’s regulars, most attendees were closed off to new conversations.
At least, that’s how it felt until I met fellow travelers, Ian and Jack, two friends who met on a previous trip abroad. They were great fun and within minutes all three of us were laughing and chatting like we’d been close for years. Eventually, we ended up at a nearby hole-in-the-wall restaurant, finishing our day over fun stories, hopes of future travel and, of course, great Portuguese cuisine.
Meeting others along the road with different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives has not only helped me create lasting connections and memories, but also has instilled a greater sense of confidence in me and what I’m capable of.
