Marvel at the Ba Mu Pagoda Gate

Located in the heart of Hoi An’s Old Town is Ba Mu Pagoda, a striking temple for multiple deities and with origins dating back to the 17th century.
Ba Mu consists of a three-chamber hall and a spacious outdoor area. While it’s suffered damage over the years from wars and changing locations, its unique architectural character is still evident today. Its beautiful lily pond, three door gate and lovely moss-covered walls in particular, make it nothing short of enchanting.

Secret Tip:
In addition to being a historic site, Ba Mu Pagoda is also an active place of worship. To remain as respectful as possible during your visit:
- Dress modestly, covering knees and shoulders.
- Walk lightly, speak softly, and refrain from loud or impolite behavior.
- Avoid eating or drinking inside.
- If taking photos, balance the desire for Instagram-worthy shots with respect for the pagoda’s solemnity.

Stroll Across the Japanese Covered Bridge
The Japanese Bridge, also known as Cau Pagoda (Chùa Cầu), is an iconic footbridge and symbol of peace and prosperity in Hoi An. Constructed around the 17th century by Japanese merchants, legend says that it was built to protect the village against Namazu, a mythical creature believed to cause earthquakes and floods.

With a Japanese-style curved roof decorated in yin and yang patterns and a temple atop, the bridge’s design expertly blends a few different cultural and architectural styles.

Enroll in a Local Cooking Class

For another immersive Hoi An experience, enroll in a cooking class to learn how to prepare traditional Vietnamese dishes.
Cooking classes in Hoi An are especially unique. In addition to the actual time spent in the kitchen, many also include a trip to the local market to purchase fresh ingredients and a trip on one of the village’s famous coconut boats.

The Class I Recommend:
I learned how to make traditional Vietnamese dishes with Lantern Restaurant and Cooking Class. Chef Thanh was exceptionally helpful and customized the class to work around my wrist injury. We made a wonderful Green Mango Salad, Traditional Vietnamese Pancake and Cashew Nut Chicken!
I love how his class also has a few different excursion options so you can really customize your experience based on your interests!

Savor White Rose Dumplings
One activity that I always aim to do while traveling is sampling delicious local cuisine. In Hoi An, this means digging into a plate of White Rose Dumplings.
Despite being widely available at numerous restaurants and street food stalls around town, this local specialty is actually a secret recipe! Only one family in all of Hoi An knows how to make the White Rose Dumplings and have been supplying to all the restaurants and vendors throughout town for over 100 years.
Cost: Varies by Restaurant*

Secret Tip:
White Rose Dumplings can be found throughout Hoi An, but to try them right from the source, make sure to stop by White Rose Restaurant during your trip.

Shop the Night Market
Arguably the most popular in Vietnam, Nguyen Hoang Night Market completely surprised me. As someone who normally avoids “tourist traps”, this night market wasn’t originally high on my bucket list, but after one free evening, it was quick to see why Nguyen Hoang has become such an iconic spot.
Overlooking the Thu Bon River and the Japanese Covered Bridge, Nguyen Hoang is open each night from 6PM – 10PM local time. Illuminated by hundreds of lanterns both within the market and throughout the surrounding streets, it’s home to a number of different stalls selling food, jewelry, clothing and other various trinkets.
If you’re knew to bartering and looking to hone your skills, this is an amazing place to try! Many of the stalls here have similar or even the same smaller items, so if you find something you love, it’s fairly simple to walk away if the price isn’t right.

Visit Tan Ky Ancient House
Located in Old Town Hoi An, Tan Ky House is a beautifully preserved 18th-century merchant’s residence. While the home’s layout is in the same style that you’ll find in many buildings have throughout Hoi An, Tan Ky’s design also includes a lot of Chinese and Japanese influences.
Here, you’ll find Chinese poems written into the home’s columns and a triangular five rafter Japanese-style roof inside the front house, symbols of the city’s past as a popular international trading port.

Now, if you’ve been following along for a while now, you’ll know I love “living museums” and Tan Ky is no exception. Full of horizontal lacquered boards, priceless vintage furniture and beautifully preserved antiques, Tan Ky House provide a revealing glimpse into the day-to-day life of Hoi An’s citizens centuries ago.
Perhaps the most rare and intriguing antique you must see at Tan Ky is The Confucius Cup. Dating back to the 16th century, the Confucius Cup recounts the story of Confucius, receiving a unique cup while traversing the desert that poured out water when filled to capacity but retained it when only partly filled.
Address: 101 Nguyễn Thái Học, Phường Minh An
Hours 8AM – 5PM daily, but can vary during holidays.
Entry Cost: 35,000 VND (~1.45 USD)*
Additional Info: Inside the central part of the house is a solemn area to worship, so arriving in modest and respectful dress is recommended.

Get Custom Tailored Clothing

One of the most unique and unparalleled experiences Hoi An has to offer is custom tailoring. With skilled tailors and cobblers scattered across the town, Hoi An offers an array of affordable and swift services to bring your dream wardrobe to life.
And depending on what types of look you’re trying to create, you can have a brand new custom outfit in as little as a few hours to a few days. While my injury and cast deterred me from getting any new outfits during my time in Hoi An, I opted for two new pairs of boots that quickly were put into use during my trip.
Where I Made My Custom Boots:
I ordered two custom pairs of boots from Laughing Cow Leather Shop and had the best experience! The owner and her family spoke wonderful English so it was easy to discuss all the design details And from choosing the materials all the way to my final fitting, everything was so seamless. Because my boots required a completely new design and didn’t follow any sort of template they had in-store, I ended up spending just over 100 USD total (a little pricey by Hoi An standards, but absolutely worth it for the wonderful service and high level of quality that I received!).
Address: 349 Nguyen Duh Hieu
Hours: 8AM – 8:30PM daily, but can vary during holidays.
Cost: Varies by Request. I recommend shopping around Hoi An first for custom quotes.

Explore Marble and Monkey Mountain
Marble Mountain and Monkey Mountain are two iconic landmarks near Hoi An that are often combined on half day trips from town.
Marble Mountain, known locally as Ngu Hanh Son, is a cluster of five limestone hills named after the five elements: earth, water, fire, metal, and wood. Each hill is adorned with caves, pagodas, and intricate marble sculptures showcasing Vietnam’s rich heritage and craftsmanship. Visitors can climb staircases carved into the mountainside to explore hidden grottoes, Buddhist sanctuaries, and panoramic viewpoints overlooking the coastal plains.
Monkey Mountain, or Son Tra Mountain, is a perfect place to observe diverse and endangered wildlife. The mountain derives its name from more than 400 brown-shanked douc langurs that call this area home. While I unfortunately had to cancel my visit here due to a last minute injury, I’ve heard that it’s absolutely magical to see the monkeys swing around, find food, and interact!

In addition to their thriving monkey population, Monkey Mountain is also home to a number of endangered species like the brocade python and red-faced chicken. And if animal sightings aren’t at the top of your bucketlist, Monkey Mountain is still worth the visit for its large Lady Buddha Statue, the tallest Buddha statue in all of Vietnam!
Marble Mountain Cost: 40,000 VND (~2 USD)*
- The elevator, if you decide to use it, is an additional 15,000 VND (~0.62 USD)*
Monkey Mountain Cost: Free*
Additional Info: While I wasn’t able to make this trip myself, I’ve heard the best time Marble and Monkey Mountains is mid-week to avoid the crowds.
Also, consider booking a half day trip with a tour operator for a lovely door-to-door experience! Half day tours usually run about 600,000 – 750,000 VND (~25 – 30 USD)* all-in and are available to book across many of the big travel booking platforms (Get Your Guide, Airbnb, etc.).

Embark on a Photo Tour of Old Town

Hoi An is famous for its lantern-lit streets, traditional yellow homes and idyllic rice fields. In such a picturesque and magical setting, it’s hard to not want to capture the moment. So savor the beauty and invest in your own custom souvenir photographs via a personal photo shoot or photo tour.
A photoshoot with Hoi An Film Studio was one of the most fun things I did in Hoi An! Not only did I have an enchanting time making memories with my photographer and his assistant, but I also was shown some of the most beautiful corners in Old Town – places that I may not have found on my own!
What I loved about Hoi An Film Studio is that they offer a variety of photo shoot packages with customizable options and add-ons to fit your preferences. I booked their 2 hour shoot package around Old Town with a rooftop coffee shop stop!
Cost: Vary based on the number of people in your group, time spent, the number of photos and/or videos you’re hoping for, ao dai and/or suit rental preferences, and optional make-up and hair add-ons*

Enjoy A Massage At A Spa

After a day full of sightseeing and exploring, there’s nothing better than winding down with a bit of relaxation. And in Hoi An, there’s so many quality and affordable spas available, I found that getting a treatment was hard to pass up!
With options ranging from quick foot massages to full traditional Vietnamese massages, there’s something for every type of traveler and itinerary.

Bargaining in Vietnam:
Just like at the market, the prices at spas are often negotiable. Here are a few tips to remember when bargaining in Vietnam:
Remember it’s fun: At the end of the day, haggling is a bit of a game and suppose to be entertaining. Try not to take it too seriously and, if you’re running short on time, it may be best to avoid it altogether.
Research Prices: Head to a few different spas to get the best idea of your treatment’s price range. As a general rule of thumb, independent spas throughout town will always be much less expensive than hotel spas.
Counter Low: The lower the first number you counter with, the better your final price will be. When in doubt, starting with a number that’s about 30% of the starting price is a good bet.
Learn a Few Vietnamese Phrases: Although many people in Hoi An speak at least a little English, having a few Vietnamese words under your belt is certainly useful – and respectful – when it comes to bargaining:
- ‘Xin chào’ (sin chao): Hello
- ‘Cảm ơn’ (gum un): Thank you
- ‘Dắt quá’ (dah kwah): Too expensive
Use VND: Make sure you have VND on hand and don’t use USD. Many ATMs only have large US dollar bills, which will be detrimental to you when it comes to negotiating.

Sip Vietnamese Coffee from a Rooftop

Picture this: you’re perched high on a rooftop overlooking Old Town Hoi An. With a cup of Vietnamese coffee in hand, the hectic sounds along the bustling streets below echo in the breeze and time feels like it’s slowed down. All around you are are rows and rows of traditional brown tiled rooftops dotting the sky.
From up here, it’s easy to soak in the beauty of Hoi An while enjoying a drink that’s deeply rooted in Vietnamese tradition. I’m not a coffee drinker myself, but was able to enjoy this enchanting view and this peaceful experience with a lovely fruit tea in hand. It’s all about taking a moment to pause, to appreciate the simple joys of life, and to soak in the magic of this enchanting town.
So whether you like your coffee strong or sweet – or perhaps not at all, a rooftop experience in Old Town Hoi An is sure to leave a lasting impression.
Cost: Varies depending on your order, but drinks are typically around 40,000 – 150,000 VND (~1.5 – 7 USD)*

Soak Up The Sun At An Bang Beach

Visiting Hoi An during the dry season? Relax and unwind at An Bang Beach, a beautiful stretch of coastline located just a short drive or bike ride from Hoi An’s town center.
With warm water, soft sand and plenty of restaurants along the stretch, An Bang is a perfect place to cool off during Vietnam’s warmest months.
How To Get To An Bang Beach:
The fastest way to reach An Bang Beach – and the one I recommend – is by taxi, which can be easily hailed using the Grab app. One-way rides are typically 80,000 VND (~3.30 USD)*.
Looking for a more active visit? Try renting a bicycle to get to the beach! The journey from Old Town is about 5 kilometers along a relatively flat route.
Enter and/or park at An Bang from the main road, Hai Ba Trung. From there, bike parking is available on the right.
